Stepparent adoptions are beautiful and complex

On Behalf of | Mar 22, 2019 | Family Law

Adopting a child is a beautiful experience for a family. There are many types of adoptions, so people who are considering this should ensure that they are making the correct decision for their family. One type of adoption is a stepparent adoption. This enables a child to have another supporting figure at home when one parent is absent from their life. We know that there are only certain cases in which this is a possibility.

There are some special challenges that come with these adoptions. The primary one is that the absent parent’s rights have to be terminated. This can sometimes be challenging to do. There is a chance that they will suddenly decide that they want to be in the child’s life when they find out that another adult is willing to become a legal parent to the child. We will let you know what we might be able to do to make this happen.

We know that you might feel a lot of emotions when you think about the adoption. While we aren’t able to take those away from you, we can let you know what is possible from a legal standpoint so that you can make decisions that put the child first. We will work on your behalf to ensure that your legal rights are being respected throughout the process.

Another thing for you to think about in these cases is that you likely aren’t going to get through the process quickly. They take time, so be prepared for what you can do and then to wait. When you get that finalized adoption paperwork, your efforts and patients will be well-rewarded.
