Kentucky is in the midst of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which will run in full force through Jan. 1, 2019. The increased enforcement is aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road and putting a stop to the drunk driving crashes that are fully preventable. This campaign is said to reduce fatalities caused by drunk driving by up to 20 percent.
In the past five years, there have been 23 drunk driving deaths during New Year’s and Christmas. The only way to prevent this from happening, as well as preventing the possibility of a drunk driving criminal case, is making plans to get home if you are going to go out drinking.
Partygoers who are over 21 years old have the option of using the Lyft app for a ride that is part of the Safe Ride Kentucky Coalition’s $20,000 holiday campaign. You can enter “sleighrideky” into the app to receive two free $10 rides with the ride-sharing program.
With proper planning, you can make it home safely after your night of fun. Even if you have to wait on a ride, this is probably better than having to start your 2019 off behind bars, which is possible if you are charged with drunk driving in this state.
It is possible that something will happen that will require you to drive after you’ve had a couple of drinks. If you do this and get pulled over, remember that you have specific rights. You also have options for handling your defense strategy. Be sure to get started on this as quickly as possible so that you have time to evaluate those possibilities.
