Many serious car accidents happen at intersections

People who are focused on safe driving often wonder where they are most in danger. Where do they face the greatest risk of being involved in a crash caused by another driver? Where should they be extra vigilant about safety, focusing on defensive driving and trying to avoid these accidents?

In many ways, the answer to all of these questions is that people face the greatest danger at intersections. Every year, the government reports that about 25% of traffic fatalities happen at intersections. At the same time, roughly 50% of all traffic injuries occur at intersections.

Why are they so dangerous?

The main reason for the danger at an intersection is that it just takes one simple mistake to cause an accident. There is usually nothing physically preventing a crash, and traffic lanes have to cross. Drivers will be turning in front of oncoming cars. As long as everyone follows the lights or traffic signals properly, this works without incident, but one driver who makes an error could cause a serious crash.

Distracted driving is also a major issue. Some drivers do not see a stop sign and will run it unintentionally. Other drivers will be on their phones while waiting at a red light, but they are still mentally distracted when they start driving again – for another 27 seconds, on average – even if they put the phone down. These drivers could proceed out of turn or make other mistakes, leading to a crash.
